Although during his lifetime Sergiu Celibidache avoided the common methods of documentation he didnīt produce any records out of inner conviction and very seldom gave interviews there exists an amount of material which can hardly be overlooked following his career from the very beginning. It starts with recording tapes from the fourties when he was in Berlin, conducting the orchestra of the University of Music. Later his work with various orchestras in the broadcasting system was documented. In the archives of the radio stations but also in many private sources many more than one thousand recorded documents are stored for future generations and contain interviews, seminars, auditions and concerts. Also to be found are a great many photographs and films of auditions, concerts and private discussions.

Inestimable is the value and size of his personal heritage, which contains not only writings, notes and essays about musical phenomenology, but above all his compositions, which are almost unknown to the public.

Besides this material from the media and the heritage in form of writings and compositions, the Sergiu Celibidache Stiftung should strive to explore the non-material sources, ie the living memories of the people, especially the musicians, who knew Maestro Sergiu Celibidache and so can bear witness of him firsthand.

An important and obvious task of the centre of archives will be first to save that which already exists, be it in the form of interviews with interesting contemporaries or by transferring the various sources of material onto digital media which will secure their storing for the future.

The purpose of the work in the centre of archives will be finally to make accessible the collected data. This means not only the publication or the making available of a more or less complete chronology of the artistic and pedagogical opus of Celibidache. Musicians and scientists, people who are interested and students should have the possibility of an insight in the data on an international basis. For this reason the aim is to transfer onto digital systems all documents and to create a network of centres, first in Munich, Paris, Bucharest, Tokyo, Bologna and Rome.

Within this network it should be possible observing the particular legal situations to exchange digitally all documents in the archives; they should be made available first to the people in those countries where Celibidache was active during his career.

In addition, it is one of the tasks of the foundation to publish compositions, writings, manuscripts of seminars such as documents of tone and pictures in the sense of an edition of original texts.
